What is Regatta Workbench?

  1. What is Regatta Workbench?

Regatta Workbench is a free rowing regatta results management platform designed to provide rowing regattas with the tools they need to provide fast, accurate results on race day. It is built on an open computing platform and data standards for the management of rowing regatta information.

  2. How do I get my regatta's entries into Regatta Workbench?
Most regattas use Workbench's import wizard to download their initial batch of entries from RegattaCentral, then periodically use Workbench's 'Sync' wizard to merge in new and modified entries as they are updated in RegattaCentral.

  3. What are the parts of the platform?
Regatta Workbench has both client-side components that run on a PC or laptop and server side components.

The 3 client components are 1) the Results Manager, 2) Live Capture for capturing crew splits as they cross the race course timing milestones and 3) Media Hub for publishing results data to Twitter.

The 2 server components are 1) the Regatta Collaboration Server (RCS) that enables sharing of operational and timing data and 2) the Live Results Server (LRS) that is the publishing platform for heat sheets, coaches reports, and live results and team points. The Live Results Server provides content for both its web interface and mobile app.

  4. What operating systems can the PC-based components run on?
Regatta Workbench gets the most testing on Windows, but it runs on Mac and Linux, too. Feedback / bug reports from Mac and Linux users would be welcome.

  5. How many regattas have used Regatta Workbench? Is it ready for prime time?

Workbench started its life in 2003 as a replacement for a results spreadsheet for the Jack Speakmon Memorial Regatta, a head race held in Columbus, Ohio. Since then it has grown and matured.

As free software, there's no way of telling how many regattas are using Regatta Workbench. One indicator are those that have loaded the tool and downloaded their regatta entries from Regatta Central. Another adoption indicator is using the number of regattas that have posted results generated by Regatta Workbench. Since the phrase "Created using Regatta Workbench" is printed at the bottom of results reports, a Google search finds results generated by Regatta Workbench.
In 2011, these 150 regattas downloaded RML from Regatta Central using Regatta Workbench:
